The Oakland Museum of California is recruiting volunteer docents to lead tours for school groups on weekdays, and adults and families on weekends in our revitalized Art and History galleries. Training begins in 2009. No teaching experience is necessary. People of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Share your talents, perspective, and enthusiasm for California with our diverse Bay Area audience.
Join us for an Open House for prospective docents on Sunday, January 18, at 1 p.m. in the Docent Center. Guests will meet current History and Art docents, and enjoy a docent-led tour of our current exhibition, The Art and History of Early California. Pre-registration is appreciated but not required. Become a History Docent. Training begins February 17, 2009 and continues on Tuesday afternoons through January 2010, with a three-month break in the summer. History docents are required to take a California history course at a local college concurrent with their museum training. The deadline for History Docent applications is February 1, 2009.
Become an Art Docent. Training begins in May 2009 with a two-session orientation. Beginning in mid-September 2009, classes will meet weekly until March 2010. The deadline for Art Docent applications is April 15, 2009.
There is a $150 fee for either of these trainings; scholarships are available. To request an application please contact the Docent Center at 510/238-3514 or docentcenter@museumca.org.
