BECOME A DOCENT

The Docent Council comprises OMCA's 250 docents—guides in the Art, History and Natural Sciences galleries who help visitors of all ages enjoy and appreciate California's natural wonders and cultural riches. Won’t you join us?

No experience is necessary—just enthusiasm for learning what California offers and eagerness to share that enthusiasm. Upon completing a year of training, you will be ready to help our visitors make their own discoveries about California's art, history, and natural environment and begin to give regularly scheduled tours in our galleries. After your first year, you also will be eligible to lead tours for the special exhibitions in your field.

As a docent, you’ll be rewarded with the excitement that comes with learning from top professionals in your chosen field. You’ll make new friends with people who have similar interests and become part of a great institution. Most of all, you’ll help to ignite a spark in a young person's imagination, or experience the pleasure of leading visitors toward making discoveries that bring new insights about life in our great state.
The next Docent training class will be offered in 2012. Please consider becoming an Oakland Museum Ambassador in the meantime.  For more information about joining the docent corps, please call 510-318-8470 or e-mail docentcenter@museumca.org.
