What do YOU want the Bay be to be?

As you drive, walk, bike, or sail along the San Francisco Bay, have you ever wondered how healthy the Bay is? While working on an upcoming exhibition about the Bay, I find that this thought often comes to my mind.In September of this year, curator Christopher Richard and I went to the State of the San Francisco Estuary conference. While I was overwhelmed at times being surrounded by scientists, it did enlighten me to just how complex the simple question of "How is the Bay doing?" really is.

OMCA is pretty impressed with our second-place winner, Cira Seyer-Ochi!

The juniper-loving eight-year-old was so inspired by the John Muir exhibition that she even created art work of her own to submit as part of her entry. We loved the submission so much that she was voted runner up! As second- prize winner, Cira will enjoy an OMCA Store and Tenaya Lodge gift bag filled with fun gifts to inspire her journal writing, as well as her next outdoor adventure. Congratulations, Cira!

Roger Moore is the third prize winner for OMCA's Tenaya Lodge Contest! Roger wins a guided nature walk around Lake Merritt with an OMCA naturalist, complete with bird watching and a special Blue Oak café picnic. We think that Amelia and Matthew will especially enjoy this outing. Congratulations, Roger, and thank you for sending your thoughtful essay below!

In Memory of Ira Michael Heyman

It is with great sadness that the Oakland Museum of California marks the recent passing of Ira Michael Heyman, former Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley; former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; and great friend to OMCA. Mike's late wife, Therese Thau Heyman, was the senior curator of photography and prints at the Museum for more than three decades, and was largely responsible for building OMCA's extraordinary photography collection, including the Dorothea Lange Archives.
