Making a Bequest For the Oakland Museum of California

A gift from your will or living trust is known as a bequest. A bequest for the Oakland Museum of California may be easily included in your will or living trust when it is written or revised. You may make a gift to the Oakland Museum of California from your estate by signing a new will or trust instrument, or by adding a codicil to your present will or an amendment to your present trust instrument. Regardless of the size or your estate or of your charitable bequest, the full value of your gift may be deductible against federal estate taxes, without limitation. The correct legal name and entity for bequests to the museum is: THE OAKLAND MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA FOUNDATION.

Steps to take to make a bequest:

1. Make a will or living trust
Many people think or talk about leaving gifts to charities or loved ones. However, unless you make a properly executed will or trust, your assets will simply be divided among your relatives according to a formula prescribed by California state law. A letter of intent or verbal promise does not ensure that your wishes will be carried out. A legal will or trust is essential.

2. Consult an attorney
To make a will or trust, it is advisable to have the advice of an attorney with experience in estate planning. Even simple wishes need to be written correctly. The expense is modest, particularly compared to what a self-made will can cost your estate later.

3. Update your will or trust
An out-of-date plan can be almost worthless. Make sure that your will reflects changes within your family and loved ones, and in the nature and value of your assets as well as any change in your residency. A will or trust needs to be reviewed regularly to make sure that it reflects your circumstances and interests.

4. Tell us of your plans for the museum
We would like the opportunity to thank you, rather than your executor or heirs, and include you in the special activities of the Heritage Society. We will respect your confidence and any request you make for anonymity.
